Police are investigating an alleged assault in Newcastle over the weekend.
It’s believed a 20-year-old was crossing Union Lane around 11:40pm on Saturday when he was approached by a white Holden Commodore.
Police say the man and the car’s occupants got involved in a verbal altercation before a man got out of the vehicle, punching the pedestrian, who fell and hit his head on the ground.
The man from the car then produced a bottle, allegedly threatening bystanders who were trying to intervene.
Patrolling police arrived at the scene prompting the alleged offender to flee.
The 20-year-old was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Officers arrested the other two occupants of the car but later released them.
Anyone with further information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
