Charges laid after wild police chase at Wallsend

Charges have been laid following a police chase through Wallsend that ended in a three car smash yesterday.

Just before 7am, Newcastle City Police District officers attempted to pull over a Volkswagon Polo on Newcastle Road for a random breath test – but a pursuit involving nearly a dozen police cars was sparked when the driver allegedly failed to stop.

As the fleeing car neared the intersection of Metcalfe and Thomas Streets it collided with two other vehicles.

In the resulting chaos, the driver was able to slip away but was arrested nearby a short time later.

The 23-year-old man was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for assessment under police guard – no other injuries were reported from the crash at the time yesterday.

The Speers Point man has since been charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, not give particulars to other driver, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not m/v), and never licensed person drive vehicle on road.

He has been bail refused to appear in Newcastle Local Court today.
