Cardiff Bakery Gutted In Early Morning Blaze, 2 Bakers Escape

A Cardiff bakery has gone up in flames overnight, with firefighters under the pump to save homes located above the shop.

The blaze broke out around 1:20 this morning in the bake house on Main Road.

Two staff members had been working at the time.

The pair self-evacuated along with residents from surrounding buildings as smoke poured out of the shop and billowed into the night sky.

Fire crews from Cardiff, Wallsend, Charlestown, Lambton, Mayfield West and Teralba stations were called to the scene and worked for 2 hours to bring the blaze under control.

They were able to gain access to the adjoining premises to make sure the fire did not spread, pumping water in from an aerial hose to keep it out of the roof.

Once it was extinguished, Fire and Rescue NSW said the bakery had been completely gutted, but there was no damage to the adjoining homes and no one needed medical attention.
