The Life & Legacy of Gai Waterhouse

When you think of Gai Waterhouse you think of words like commitment, passion, determination, hard work, a trail blazer, verve, charisma and success.

Gai Waterhouse is the  leading lady of Australian horse racing. The daughter of legendary trainer TJ Smith. Gai dreamt of a life on the stage but her everlasting love for racing brought her back to the track. In 1992 Gai took over the family stable and since then has risen to join her father TG as one of Australia’s best ever trainers of all time, Gai has trained 145 G1 winners and won seven Sydney trainers’ premierships. Gai won the Melbourne Cup in 2013 becoming the third woman (and first Australian woman) to train a winner of that race. Gai was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2007, and has been described as the first lady of Australian racing.
